If you strip away the numbers go up part of the story their is very little left. The loop is have fight -> numbers go up -> fight new more powerful creature.
Transformation wise, he is an octopus that sometimes talks about being human
Their is a side story with someone who is much more intresting but no transforamtion their so not much to recomend their either
