Parents
The name Dave rang a bell. Dave. I think I met Dave, one of Maria’s friends. “That sounds nice. And maybe our parents- Err, your parents can come too?” They were already wincing at the slip up. It dawned on them that the people that had been their parents in the original realm were no longer alive.
“Sure! If they’re not busy, which they aren’t really these days.”
That had Ren sighing with relief. It got them wondering, though. If they were dead in this realm, would they be in the original realm too? “Yes, that would be fun.”
Maria gave them a cheeky look. “Also, I heard what you said.”
“What’s that?”
“You said ‘our’ parents.”
Ren’s heart imploded on itself. “Er, yeah. Sorry.”
Maria laughed it off. “No, no, no. It’s sweet, and not that far off from the truth, really. I’ll tell them you said that. They’ll think it’s sweet too.”
Not far off from the truth? What’s that supposed to mean? They recalled how Maria and them had ‘bonded’, the most likely explanation. Ren laughed nervously. “Yeah, I hope so.”
Maria laughed with them. “You’re so funny today! Did you take something?”
They laughed awkwardly. “Yeah, probably. I suppose I’m just in a good mood.”
“Well, whatever it is, mind sharing it with me? Before you do that, though, help me put these away.”
“Oh, right.”
The groceries were put away in short order, all while Maria’s tale of what had happened kept repeating in Ren’s head. There’s got to be more to it that I don’t know about. Stuff online, or on Maria’s phone. Maria sat herself on the couch in front of the TV to watch some Netflix. Ren sat with her, absentmindedly assuming an immaculate posture with their knees together and their back straight. Damn. I’m a real stick up the ass in this world, aren’t I? Ren took note of the selection Netflix had to offer. None to their surprise were movies featuring Digimon haphazardly pasted onto movie posters he recognized. Most were action and comedy movies dating from the past two decades. Everything from the mid 2010’s and earlier were devoid of Digimon, creating a queer new dating system, BD and AD. Before Digimon, After Digimon.
