Breakfast
Another grumble was Maria’s response. She went to the kitchen and opened the fridge to begin making breakfast. Ren sat forward on the couch to resume watching the news. While the sound and smell of fried eggs and bacon filled the apartment Ren absorbed what else was going on in the world: sports, weather, a crisis someplace, civil unrest in another, all with a comical Digimon zest. It almost made the major wars going on funny, but even the stoic Ren was capable of empathy. Hearing about Digimon being hurt and killed alongside humans reminded them that, no matter how bizarre things were, this was still reality. Ren squirmed in their seat. Memories of surviving as a wild Vaporeon and being a kidnapped Selkie were unpleasant memories needn’t repeating. No. I’m safe here. All is safe. Relax. They recalled the package in the closet and all the other onesies. Just don’t let Maria near them. Can she even see or interact with them? It was best not to tempt fate and not never mention them like Ren had already been doing.
Brother and sister shared a breakfast of bacon and eggs. Ren had made a habit of treating every meal like it was at a fancy Five star restaurant, cutting each wedge of egg with delicacy and gently munching the bacon, all while maintaining astute posture in their chair. It went with all the other mannerisms they’d adopted after coming to this realm, those being reserved and stoic. This was in contrast to Maria, her still frizzy hair spilling into the table edge as she hovered over her plate and stuffed her face. It was good to know that she hadn’t changed much from the original human realm. Ren remembered calling her after turning into a skunkette and freaking out upon the discovery that Maria was one too. A tiny smile pulled on Ren’s lips as they nibbled on some more bacon.
The last of breakfast was put away before Maria got up to get dressed. Ren gathered the plates to put them in the wash. There was an apparently non-spoken I cooked, You clean rule. Ren didn’t mind, not when it added a little more routine in the morning. Any other version of me wouldn’t be so kind, said a playful thought.
Ren was back on the couch watching some more of the news when Maria came out of her room much more presentable. “Alright, you ready?” she asked as if Ren had anything else to do.
