Strange Happenings star star star star star

Midnight. They always came at midnight. The chimes from the old grandfather clock in the den jolted Daniel out of his restless dreams. It wasn't the chimes that woke him so much as the knowledge that They were coming. It was the same horrifying ritual, every single night.

The room was illuminated by an eerie pale green glow. Three figures in haz-mat suits stood around his bed. One of them held a large briefcase, another held a gun, and the third--the apparent leader, from the way he acted--was making entries into a large handheld computer. Daniel tried to escape, to run, to even move, but some unseen force held him in place, as immobile as the bed itself. The leader looked up from his computer and signaled to the one holding the briefcase, who set the case down and began to open it. Daniel strained to see its contents, but couldn't from his position. If only he could move...

The leader reached forward, grabbed the bedcovers and--

The shrill blast of Daniel's alarm clock filled the room. He'd had that dream again, the same one he'd been having every night for nearly a month. Except that it didn't feel like a normal dream. It felt more like a memory, but one that had been partially forgotten. Anyway, Dan had more important things to worry about, so he pushed whatever it was aside for the moment. Today was the last day of school, finally. All he had to do was survive his last few final exams, and he'd be home free. He wasn't about to let a creepy dream get him down.

Dr. DiCaoz glanced over his biology classroom. "Is anybody still working on the final?" he asked tiredly. He paused for a moment, then said, "If everybody is finished, you may talk quietly amongst yourselves for the remainder of the period." As the class erupted in chatter, he went back to nursing his hangover.

Daniel loved his biology class. It wasn't just that he was good at it, or that it was the last class of the day. By some bit of luck or fate, he happened to be in the same class as his four closest friends, Gassan, David, Pammy, and Jake. Gassan, David, and Pammy had become absurdly popular since coming to high school. Gassan was Lebanese and therefore "exotic," David was a star swimmer, and Pammy was a cheerleader. In retrospect, popularity was an inevitability. To the other popular kids, Jake an avid follower of the Furry subculture (he called it a craze, but nobody else did) and Daniel, the introspective writer, were social liabilities. Still, Gassan, David, and Pam never let their newfound "friends" keep them away from Jake and Dan. Privately, Daniel was grateful that he had managed to befriend the four people who appeared to be immune to high school drama.

"So, what'd you guys think?" Pammy whispered.

"I'm pretty sure Dr. Di is a nutcase," Gassan answered quickly. He was met with a chorus of approval from his companions.

"Anyway," Pam continued, "are we having our annual Thank-God-The-Schoolyear's-Over party tonight?"

"I can't go," Jake said, "I've got a convention."

"I can't go either," said David, "My dad's taking me camping. He's on a back-to-nature kick."

"I'm visiting my grandma," Gassan said. Pammy rolled her eyes.

"Alright," she sighed, "when do you guys get back?"

"Sunday"

"Sunday evening"

"Sunday, but it'll be late."

"So," Pammy continued, "is Monday night alright with everyone?"

***

The days passed quickly. By the time Monday arrived, he had gone an entire weekend without his mysterious dreams. He was mostly relieved, but part of him wished the visitors would come back so he could find out what they were up to.

The streets were charged with an eerie calm. A summer storm was coming. As Daniel reached Pam's door, he couldn't help but feel a strange foreboding. Something was decidedly wrong. He rang the bell.

"Come in," called Pammy. Dan opened the door and found friend sitting on the floor in a tidy circle. They were all staring at him, an unsettling hunger in their eyes. "We are playing Truth or Dare," Pammy intoned mechanically. "Please, join us. Truth or Dare?"

"Please choose Dare," Gassan said, in the same unearthly voice.

"The Truth is never any fun," agreed David, still in the same tone. Throughout the exchange, none of the four took their eyes off of Daniel.

"Is everything alright?" he asked. "You all seem...different."

Pammy answered in the same monotone as before: "We are collectively unnerved at a series of recurring dreams we have been having. Perhaps you too are experiencing these visions?"

"Yeah," Dan said, "but I'm not acting that weird about it."

"Perhaps," Pammy said, "All will be made more clear if you answer this simple question: Truth...or Dare?"

"Dare," Dan said shakily.

"Very well," Pammy responded, "your dare is to go to Area 50. You are familiar with Area 50, I trust?"

Jake jumped in: "It is a military complex on the outskirts of our town. It has been abandoned for a long time, though, so it will pose no immediate threat to you."

"It is nothing to be afraid of," said Gassan, "consider it to be something of a rite of passage."

"If you are truly afraid," said Pammy, "then we will accompany you."

Daniel stared at his friends incredulously. They had never acted this strangely before, and they had certainly never gone for childish dares before.

David appeared to sense his hesitation, and added, "perhaps Area 50 is somehow related to...Them."

Dan knew what that was about, and David was right. There seemed to be some connection between his nightly visitors and the military base. He couldn't quite place it, but the link was there. "Actually," added David, "all this talk of Area 50 has sparked my curiosity." He didn't sound the least bit like his curiosity has been even remotely sparked."

"I, too, am interested," agreed Pammy disinterestedly.

"As are we," said Gassan and Jake in eerie unison.

"Perhaps," Pammy went on, "we should go to Area 50 ourselves, whether or not Daniel is interested." The four of them stood to leave. Pam stopped for a moment, and asked, "Are you joining us, Daniel?"

Daniel looked at his friends nervously. "Al...alright," Daniel said reluctantly, "I will go..."

"Nice to have you coming David," Pammy exclaimed. All David could do is let out a sheepish smile. "We will meet at Area 50 at 9 P.M. tonight, everyone can run by their houses and grab anything we may need. Flash lights, snacks, etc."

"I am just going to relax at my house until it is time" David said

"We'll I will see everyone then," Gassan said. Everyone soon dispersed and left to their respective houses.
-----------------------------------------------------------

Later at 9 Daniel met his friends at the base.

"Everybody ready to go in?" Pammy inquired.

"Yeah!" Gassan shouted.

"Let's do it!" As did Jake.

"Sure am" David said

"Unfortunately..." Daniel murmured.

David looked around and saw the front entrance directly ahead.
Far down to his left a hole in the fence could be seen.
And to his right a large tunnel could be seen. Though it was pitch black, so somebody better have a flash light.

"Let's go through the tunnel over there," Daniel said and pointed.

"Alright then" Pammy replied the five of them walked over to the tunnel and peered inside, it was pitch black.

"Hellooo!" David yelled inside and only an echo replied; David laughed.

"Anyone bring a flashlight then?" Pammy questioned.

"Here's mine" Gassam pulled out of pulled out of her backpack. "Though it is kind of messed up, you have to hit it a few times to turn it on." She flipped the switched and hit it on her leg until the light shone through the lens. She aimed it into the tunnel and all that could be see was darkness. Jake took the flashlight from Gassam.

"I will be the leader, follow close behind" Jake said started to walk into the tunnel. Everyone followed close behind, Daniel took a deep breath and followed suit.

It was dark in the tunnel, Daniel could barely see his own hand in front of his face. They had been walking for 10 minutes and no way out was to be seen. He could no longer see the entrance long lost behind him. He periodically tripped on the rocks under his feet.

Jake turned out the flashlight and started making ghost sounds.

"Ha ha, fooled ya," Jake laughed.

"Just turn the light back on, Jake," Daniel cried.

"Alright, alright already," Jake replied. He flipped the switch on the light and started thumping it a few times. "Darn it, the light won't work"

"Hit it harder," Gassam said.

"I am," Jake cried, "It isn't working." David could here him labouring over the light and eventually heard it clanging on the walls.

"Don't do that!" Daniel shouted

"Don't get your panties in a bundle, Daniel, it will work," Jake exclaimed. Moments later shattering glass could be heard throughout the tunnel. "Crap!" Jake shouted

"Look what you did, clumsy!" Gassam yelled.

"Sorry," Jake said sheepishly.

"Hang on a second guys," Pammy interupted, "Look, I can see a light" Daniel could see it as well. However he had enough fun for one night and wanted to turn back, he couldn't quite decide.

Turn back or continue on towards the light?

Darkness consumed star star star halfstar emptystar

"You no what forget it, I am going back home!" Daniel yelled, as he ran off.
"Don't be such a scaredy cat! Jake replied. Daniel could barely hear him, his mind filled with thoughts and the echoing sounds of his footsteps. Daniel kept running until his breathing became rugged and heavy. He then stopped to catch his breath, he had been running for sometime now. "How long is this god forsaken tunnel" he thought. Soon he started walking, "I can't believe I am in this mess, forgot how much I hate the dark" he thought. He heard a sound some where far off; it was hard to locate with the echoing of the tunnel.

He started whistling a tune as walked, improvising it as he went on. Suddenly he fall and he was sliding down something. So many thoughts passed through his mind then. The one that stood out the most was: OH SHI-!

He finally reached the bottom, and hit his head hard on the ground. He started feeling light headed and his vision blurred, he reached for his forehead and felt blood trickling down his face. As he did so, he fell into the darkness and passed out.

When he finally came to he was looking into a bright light. After blinked a few times, he finally realised he couldn't move at all, even to turn his head. He was strapped down to a table tightly. He also noticed that he was naked, and suddenly felt embarrassed.

He closed his eyes hoping for it to all go away. So tight, tears came to them. When he opened them 3 people were standing over him, wordless.

"Who are you!" he shouted, "Answer me!". He noticed one holding a syringe in the light, it was a clear liquid. "What are you doing, wait stop!" and without much warning they injected the liquid into him. The shock of it caused him to panic, but shortly he passed out.

He later awoke in a dark room.He felt around for something to help him out, they could have at least given his clothes back. Something felt strange, something was sweeping past his legs as he crawled through the room. He felt for it and followed it up to his lower back and felt something tugging at him. He felt around the base and found that it was truly attached.

"What's happening to me!" he screamed, as he did what looked like a hatch opened behind him. It was a small crawlspace but light shone through. A door also opened to his left, but the light was dim, He was surprised Daniel he even saw it.

So follow the light or
head deeper into the jungle...

Follow the light emptystar emptystar emptystar emptystar emptystar

Daniel sighed softly as he looked over at the light shining through that crawl space. It seemed like the most safe bet for escape, being in the light sure felt more reassuring than staying in the dark. He took deep breaths to muster as much courage as he could as he shakily walked towards the hatch. His new, slender tail swished behind him as he walked, a sensation that still felt rather foreign to him.

The sudden presence of the bright artificial light momentarily blinded Daniel as he hunched over and waddled into the passage. In his moment of disorientation the small entryway closed behind him, sealing him inside of the room. Slowly his vision returned to him, revealing a group of individuals clad in pristine lab coats looking over at him expectantly.

He yelped in surprise upon seeing the people, quickly trying to leave back from where he came. However, no matter how much he struggled, there seemed to be no way to open it back up. Defeated, Daniel turned to the others in the room, one hand modestly covering his privates as the other was raised in the air defensively.

“L-look,” Daniel stammered out, “I’m sorry for trespassing, I just want to go home…”

The figure in the middle cleared his throat, stepping forward slightly. “But you’re here now,” he said flatly, not a hint of any emotion in the statement, “we might as well make the most of it. Wouldn’t you agree?”

Implants emptystar emptystar emptystar emptystar emptystar

A sense of dread overtook Daniel as he slowly looked around the room. It was a bright white, the scent of disinfectant tinged the air. There seemed to be no conventional doors in the room. Based on what Daniel knew about that crawl space he went through, it was safe to assume that there was no getting out unless they wanted him to. And he was fairly certain they didn’t want to.

It didn’t take long for him to notice the operating table close to center of the room. He’d have noticed it right away if not for focusing on the people in the room. At first glance it seemed like an average operating table. However Daniel was fairly certain that most operating tables don’t have leather straps to hold down the patient. Sure there would be one soft strap that helps hold a patient in place, but this thing had several, and none of them looked that comfortable.

“Please, lie down on the table,” the same man from before spoke. He stepped closer yet again, moving closer towards Daniel.

Before Daniel could even shake his head no the man was fishing for something in his coat pocket. Daniel’s eyes widened with shock as a small gun was aimed at him. It didn’t look like a normal pistol by any means, the barrel was large and the gun was more yellow than the standard matte black color.

Pain shot through his arm as the man fired right at Daniel. At first he assumed the worst, that there was a bullet lodged inside of him. Instead however there was a small dart poking into his skin. Not even a few moments later Daniel started to feel weak and woozy. The room started to spin all around him as he struggled to keep his balance. Everything suddenly just felt so heavy.

He could barely put up a fight as he was lead over to the operating table. It took almost all the energy he could to stay awake as the three scientists restrained him to the table. His heart was slowing and his breaths became more deep and labored. The exhaustion had come on so quickly, but it was entirely consuming, there was nothing Daniel could do but hold to consciousness.

The woman of group walked away for a moment, returning with two amorphous blobs in her hands. Daniel was too out of it to really think about ponder what they were, but an answer was swiftly delivered.

“Don’t worry,” the main scientist spoke as Daniel’s eyelids lowered more and more, “these aren’t normal implants.”

“Implaaa…-?” Daniel slurred out the beginning of his question yet was unable to finish the thought before passing out into the inky void of sleep.

When Daniel finally woke back up everything was foggy and cloudy. There was this overwhelming numbness to everything as he sat up on the dingy cot in the poorly lit room somebody had dumped him in. Even that tail he could hardly control seemed to be tired and limp, no longer flicking about without his consent.

As everything slowly bled back into focus, Daniel realized very quickly what had occurred. His chest, once smooth and flat, now was now anything but. He curiously poked his chest, shuddering at the all too real sensitivity of it all. “Th-they said they were implants,” Daniel murmured, his voice all rough and scratchy. “Wh-what the hell…?”

In fact, the more Daniel looked himself over, the less he felt like himself. His body felt larger in a way, his hips were wider and his waist more thin. And, most startling, his, or rather, her plumbing was anything but what he had grown up with. It seemed that Daniel had become a woman. The hair on his chest had vanished into his smooth skin, yet surprisingly his arms and legs seemed just as hairy as before, if not a little harrier than when he had fallen asleep. It was, however, impossible for him to be sure given how woozy he still felt.

She stood up slowly, her taller body and all the additions that came with it feeling almost as disorienting as the drugs she had pumped full of earlier. Hopes that this was all some insane dream felt too distant to even cling to as she observed her small cell. It wasn’t much, a cot, a toilet, and a sink were the only things in the square room besides herself. The concrete walls and steel door sure didn’t help make the atmosphere any more inviting either.

Ignore Them emptystar emptystar emptystar emptystar emptystar

Daniel tried her best to ignore the strangeness of being a girl. That was something easier said than done however. Every movement he made caused his new “assets” to respond with motion of their own. After years of general disinterest in the subject Daniel was finally able to grasp the reason for bras and their usefulness in providing support. Of course, out of either a cruel joke or general lack of interest, no such garments were supplied to Daniel. So she was stuck with every humiliating bounce with no way to remedy it in sight.

Day after day Daniel hoped for release from this nightmare, or at the very least some form of comfort in her body. No amount of time however seemed to be able to lessen the feeling that she was not in her own body. It was, of course, the right feeling to have. No amount of persuasion could have ever convinced Daniel in that moment that she was truly a woman. But, despite that, a part of Daniel began to wish that she could fool herself into thinking otherwise. Daniel would try to convince herself that the thought was dumb, that there was no way in hell getting comfy was the right answer to all of this. But the thought remained, nagging her consistently.

After some time of trying to supress that urge for normalcy, Daniel started to sing. It started harmlessly enough. Daniel was trying to fight of the immense boredom and idly began talking to herself. Normally that would have freaked her out and made her think she was going crazy. But she rationalized it as testing out her new voice in assumption that she would be stuck with it for the foreseeable future. The mindless recitation of tongue twisters and random words soon gave way to her quietly singing songs.

It wasn’t anything outrageously special but it was mildly interesting to say the least. Daniel had never had much of a singing voice prior to this, but now what came out of her mouth actually sounded sort of nice. It was rough of course, the dry scratchiness in her voice had only recently begun to fade, but with each day it sounded better than the last. Daniel wasn’t sure how they should take the improvement. Was it a good sign, their body recovering after the sex change? Or were they falling into a role they weren’t sure they were willing to fill? Was the gradual improvement of her voice just the first step onto a slippery slope?

Changes emptystar emptystar emptystar emptystar emptystar

She wasn’t given much time to ponder that question. Not to long into her exploits in singing she began to notice something amiss with her tail. The tail itself felt amiss, but now even that was changing further. The feline tail has gotten fluffier, the dark brown of it having shifted towards a more reddish tint. The tuft of fur that once topped it had shifted to a small tip of white fur. Daniel poked at the soft appendage as it wiggled about behind her as if nothing had changed. She was not sure how to respond to the new fox tail.

Next she noticed that the hairs on her arms and legs had begun to grow more pronounced. In fact the hairs had even begun to encroach upon the parts of her body that were once hairless. Those parts that already had hair now were growing clumps of the stuff, small patches of red hairs the same color as her tail. There wasn’t anything else at that point, but it was certainly enough to concern Daniel.

At first she assumed it was something in her food that was causing the escalation. She stopped eating all together for a few days to test the theory. It was arduous to say the least. Despite the meager and wholly mediocre offerings that made up her meals, the comfort they provided her was underappreciated until then. Her stomach would howl and growl in protest as she sat about, practically demanding that she feast on the mystery meat and bread she had been provided. The will to keep up her test wavered however as she noticed a new patch of soft white fur on her belly after a few mornings. Daniel recognized that there was a chance that whatever may have been in the food had not worked its way out of her system yet. But by then she really just couldn’t care less, she just wanted to eat.

Blood emptystar emptystar emptystar emptystar emptystar

One morning Daniel woke up with the taste of blood in her mouth. She was very concerned by that at first. Her mind assumed the worst, that she was having some negative reaction to these changes and her body was going to start failing on her. However, once she had calmed enough to investigate the source of the bleeding, things seemed far less grim. As it turned out, Daniel’s teeth had grown out and reshaped over night. Once a fairly standard set of human teeth had become full of sharp, canine teeth.

Daniel washed her mouth out in the small sink before examining her new fangs. She ran her tongue over their tips, almost entranced by how sharp they had become. If she wasn’t careful, it would have been very possible to cut her tongue open right then and there. Her daily meal was slid through the door as she gawked at herself.

Instead of the usual meal there was instead a large thermos placed in the middle of the tray.. Nothing seemed particularly notable about the container itself, just a simple stainless steel thermos. What did catch Daniel’s eyes however was the sheet of paper that accompanied the thermos. She could scarcely believe that she had been given a message from anybody as she scurried over to read the paper.

“You have been chosen for an experimental treatment. Drink the contents of the thermos within the next two hours or void your eligibility for the experiment. The alternative is life imprisonment in this cell.”

Drink emptystar emptystar emptystar emptystar emptystar

Daniel read the brief message to herself several times. For barely a paragraph of information it sure did raise a lot of questions. One things was fairly certain for Daniel however, there was no way they could possible refuse whatever it was. The mere thought spending the rest of their life alone in this cell made her shudder. If there was even a slim chance that drinking whatever was in that thermos would get her out of that cell, she’d have to take that chance.

She sat the paper back down and grabbed the thermos. A thick liquid sloshed around in the container. The thermos was ice cold, as if it had just been plucked from the freezer or something. Daniel tried her hardest to ignore any nagging doubts or worries as she unscrewed the top. A sniff of the stuff gave no distinct indication of an aroma, it was like taking a whiff of tap water.

After a moment of shaky hesitation she raised the thermos to her lips. Her eyes clamped shut as the first trickle of the viscous fluid tickled her tongue. Just as how it lacked any specific scent, there was no flavor to the liquid. It did not expand past texture, even as it slowly lurched down her throat she couldn’t really describe anything else about it. In some ways that was a nice surprise, better to have no flavor than a bad one, but in other ways, it just compounded more and more foreboding weirdness onto the whole thing.

The more she drank the easier it seemed to flow. The viscosity hadn’t changed, but the inhibitions that Daniel had began to lessen and weaken. Her heart rate slowed, her eyelids grew somewhat droopy, and a strange haze of drowsiness snuck up on her. Before she knew it she had guzzled back the whole container. She wiped her mouth as the thermos slipped out from her weak grip and bounced off the ground with a thud.

Memory Drain emptystar emptystar emptystar emptystar emptystar

Daniel flopped onto her bed, unsure how to feel. Part of her was concerned by how quickly her energy had been drained, another part of her felt too calm to actually get bothered. So, instead of worrying about how she should feel, she simply stared up at the ceiling quietly. Everything had slowed to a crawl around her, it was as if the world was playing in slow motion. Every breath and every blink was an ordeal, a hurdle that her empty feeling body had to struggle through.

With each moment everything felt more distant. Details and thoughts began to drain out of Daniel’s mind without warning. She was hardly even able to tell that she was forgetting anything at all. But she was indeed losing her memories. Day by day, week by week, month by month, year by year all of what formed Daniel into the person she was began to dissipate. Birthdays, first days of school, favorite games, best friends, worst enemies, they all were bowing out.

There were fleeting moments in which Daniel recognized what was happening. Despite the overbearing, lazy tiredness that had been inflicted upon her, she would come up to the surface of consciousness just long enough to take the reigns for a moment. Those moments were marred by murky panic. Worry about how much she had forgotten, fear for what would happen next, dread about if she would still be herself, those feelings are what made up the bulk of Daniel’s few moments of true full consciousness. However, despite how much she may have struggled, she was always pulled back under, back into her stupor.

Before long Daniel has forgotten herself. She had no name, no recollection of where she was or how she got there, no friends to remember, none of that. Every personal detail had left her without any fanfare. It had all been drained from her, not even the letter she had read only minutes ago was still known to her.

The woman once known as Daniel was not devoid of knowledge however. She had all her academic knowledge in tact, every book she had read and math formula she half memorized was still in her head. She just could not remember when she had learned it or the context behind it. In fact she even remembered the fact that she was once a man, a fact such as that was too jarring for any amount of memory erasure to smooth over, yet she had no idea for how long she had been in the body. She also remembered the strange growth of hair, and the fact that she had not always had a tail. All were strange to her, she knew that things like that didn’t just happen to people, but she was not too concerned in that moment.

She sat up for a moment only to be hit with a wave of exhaustion. The drink had drained not just her memory, but all her stamina and strength. With a soft thud she fell back onto the cot. It was a struggle to keep her eyes open as the cold hands of sleep wrapped around her. And, unaware of anything being amiss besides her fatigue, the young woman was more than willing to sleep.

Clothing emptystar emptystar emptystar emptystar emptystar

When she awoke she was clothed once more. She was wearing a simple hospital gown with an ID bracelet tight against her wrist. Now that she felt far more awake and alert than before she looked around her surroundings. She could have sworn that she was in some kind of cell, but now it looked as if she were in a hospital room of sorts. A quick glance down at her bracelet revealed the name “Jane Fox”, a common placeholder name for unidentified people or dead bodies. Well, at least the Jane part was, the Fox was something else entirely. If she didn’t remember being a man she’d have probably assumed that was just her name.

Once she had made sure there were no IVs or anything in her arms she stood up. Her feet felt odd with an odd amount of traction with the floor that normal human feet just don’t have. She turned her feet over and noticed rough pads had begun to grow out of her feet.

“Weird,” she mused to herself, her voice having long since defaulted to a feminine pitch.

“I’m sure you have a lot of questions,” said a male voice. “I’ll do the best I can to answer them for you.”

“Jane” looked over to the source of the voice, finding a middle aged man clad in a lab coat that felt ever so slightly familiar to her. “Hello,” she said with a curt wave, “what am I doing here?”

“You were a volunteer for a specialized program,” explained the doctor as he approached her, “one that required the removal of your personal memories. I’d ask you if that rings any bells, but it obviously will not.”

Animal's Teacher? emptystar emptystar emptystar emptystar emptystar

“I… gave up my memories?” Jane Fox looked down at her bracelet, “does that mean you guys know who I am?”

“I’m afraid not, and if we did we wouldn’t be allowed to say. It could be a confounding variable in the experiment,” the doctor replied.

“What kind of experiment is this? And does it involve the… tail?” Jane’s tail flicked about as she thought of it, not quite something she was able to control yet.

“Yes, you volunteered to attempt to teach an animal human concepts. To see that if given the potential if an animal can be more than a being of instincts. The process of course involves you taking on a similar appearance to the creature. It would help foster a sort of common ground.” The doctor checked something on a tablet as he calmly spoke.

“So… I’m trying to teach a fox how to be a person?” Jane fought the urge to scoff at the idea. If not for the fact that she had vulpine traits herself now she’d have thought the man was crazy or joking.

“A former fox, just as you are being altered, so was he. Now, I think it’s best we get the two of you introduced. Just take things at whatever pace you like, don’t rush any concepts he pushes against.” The doctor motioned for Jane to stand and began leading her down a hall.

“Wait, what about my body? I’m still mostly human.” Jane’s focus had somewhat shifted, her concerns were no longer on what she had forgotten or the changes occurring, but rather this strange experiment she had apparently given up her memories to join.

“There’s no harm in your changes finishing in his presence, in fact being with him can only serve to increase the speed of the changes,” the doctor replied flatly. He swiped a keycard and a passage opened up. After some prodding, Jane Fox stepped through it and into her test.

Foxtaur emptystar emptystar emptystar emptystar emptystar

The room was a soft eggshell color. The furnishing in the room, a pair of mattress laid out on the floor and a singular table, were the same white shade. All Jane could think about was how artificial and clinical it looked, she couldn’t have imagined anybody living in a place like this. The floor was cold but her thick pads protected her from any real discomfort as took her first steps into the room.

The large creature huddled on one of the beds was impossible to miss. In a sea of uniform white there was a dash of vibrant red. It was a fox, at least, mostly. It was larger than Jane by at least a foot and several pounds with a large, almost human like torso jutting out from a muscular, vulpine body. It had four legs and two arms and was staring the alarmed woman down with its sharp yellow eyes.

The best way Jane could describe the creature was a fox centaur, although there was not a scrap of humanity present outside of that torso’s shape. It was like something from a fantasy novel or the lab of a mad scientist from a horror film. Yet, despite how jarring the sight was, there was something impressive to the creature, an undeniable majesty that made Jane’s heart beat quicker than before. It was like the feeling of seeing a bear out in the wild, a strange mix of awe and fear.

“H-Hello there,” Jane Fox mumbled as she slowly stepped towards the creature.

It sniffed at her, the beast’s head cocked in curiosity. It stood up with ease before it began to trot around the nervous woman. It was looking her over as if it were sizing her up, every so often taking another sniff at her. Jane tried her best to hold still, barely even wanting to breathe let alone utter a word to the creature.

“Why are you here?” The creature’s voice was smooth as it spoke a sentence of perfect English. It had no discernible accent and was most definitely male.

“You can talk?!” Jane squeaked out in shock.

“Of course I can talk, everything talks,” it explained, “it’s just that you can hear it now.”

“What does that mean?” Jane rubbed her arm as the fox creature walked right up next to her. It grabbed hold of one of her ears, tugging at it slightly. She noticed then that the shape felt off, more angular and pointed than before.

“You’ve got the right ears now,” he explained.

“O-or maybe it’s because you’ve got the right mouth?” Jane winced as she spoke, his tugging had sped up the tweaks in her ears. They felt full of fluid and clogged as they shifted further, coming to rest on the top of her head. “You’re not barking like a fox after all.”

The fox creature frowned a bit, considering that. “I suppose I have sounded a bit weird recently…”

Name Him emptystar emptystar emptystar emptystar emptystar

Despite the shocking fact that he knew how to speak, nothing else was quite on par in terms of his human knowledge. He didn’t even have a name, when asked all he did was look at Jane in confusion. Despite the lack of a language barrier, the cultural barrier was bound to be just as steep. Especially if this was going to be a test on the ability to teach him how to be more human. So many ideas and concepts would have gone right over his head.

She started simple by giving him a name. It was fairly easy to explain the concept to him. He grasped the usefulness of having something to identify one’s self by that was usually exclusive to them. After some thinking, she decided to call him Tod, like from the Disney movie. A reference that he obviously did not pick up on.

“What’s your name?” asked Tod, still toying with the sound of the word.

“Oh, I don’t remember it,” Jane admitted. “My ID says Jane but that’s probably just a placeholder.”

“And… what’s that?” Tod seemed a little confused, but receptive. He wasn’t against learning any of what she had to say.

“Well, it kind of takes the place of an actual name. Since nobody knows my name. I’m basically a blank slate. Uh, that means there’s not a lot somebody can figure out about me on the surface.” She sighed as she talked, looking down at her now fur covered legs. When all that hair had come in, she wasn’t sure. The amount she had before she was thrown into this experiment was lost to her, all she remembered was that there was some there already. But now there was more than just “some”, it was basically a full coat down there.
