Maria went back to watch her show. Ren resumed scrolling until they’d hit the bottom of the gallery, seeing nothing of great use. What’s online, I wonder? A jaunt to the Google search bar provided a plethora of options when they typed in ‘Digimon’. Hitting enter brought all the information they needed, the first option coming from Wikipedia. It explained: Digimon (short for Digital Monsters) virtual pet-like creatures originating from a digital world that have materialized into reality. It followed with a history of how Digimon, once a simple media franchise that had been born from leaks between the two worlds, began phasing one by one into what Wikipedia labeled as ‘reality’. It made Ren uncomfortable thinking that what they were born out of might not have been real. If ‘born’ is even the right term to use.
It came as a great shock to see their name pop up. Renamon was mentioned as one of the earliest Digimon ever discovered, the first being Dave’s Guilmon. It even had a blue link to their own Wiki page. Ren’s thumb sat cocked over it, sorely tempted to give it a click. Am I really about to open my own Wiki? They did with just one tap. After a second of loading the page came up, and there was Ren’s perpetually disagreeable expression glowering back at them from within the info box. A surreal feeling made their gut churn. Wow. This is freaky. They read the entire thing, seeing mentions of Maria and even photos of the two together. Most incredible were the descriptions of the battles Maria had mentioned. Once Digimon came into the real world in full there were whole wars and battles fought by people wielding the creatures’ powers. Ren and her comrades were on the frontlines, dueling the villains back and establishing peace. Their heart raced as they read through fantastic events they had experienced but possessed no memory of. This was “the rest” that Maria was talking about. It was totally insane.
“You alright over there?”
Maria looked up from the phone. “What?”
“I asked if you were alright. You look scared of something. What are you looking at?”
Ren laughed nervously, if just to ease the tension. “Well, uh… My wiki page, actually.”
Now Maria laughed. “Oh yeah? You know narcissists do that.”
“I don’t doubt it. There’s a page on you too, you know. Wanna read it?”
Maria rolled her eyes and looked back at the TV. “I’d rather not.”
Ren realized how amped the page was making them, thus they exited out of it. “Yeah, I understand.”
