You are standing by a tree star star star emptystar emptystar

There are 3 paths.

One appears to go to a jungle,
one appears to go to a cave,
one appears to go to a beach,
you could try and climb the tree,
there is a nearby shop you could go in,
or you could do something else.

So what's its going to be?

You sit under the tree.

Suddenly...

See? Keep moving or you get tranked. That's how the game is played. star star star halfstar emptystar

Your relaxing moment under the tree is rudely interrupted by an abrupt transformation. You are hit by a tranquilizer dart, which turns you into a person with a tranquilizer dart stuck in their neck. It's an easy change. Of course, your train of thought gets about as far as "Oh good heavens, a dart of some kind. I'd betteeerrgmphqq," at which point the dart takes effect, and you slump under the tree like a drugged-up rag doll. A half-hearted twitch is all the moving you do for quite some time. Eventually, you wake up. When you do, you are...

Whatever was in the tranquilizer, it's not very eager to wear off. In the vague fog between awake and asleep, you learn that you are in a sitting position, in a mildly comfortable chair, and there is a nice-sounding voice welcoming you to the Transformational Institute.

Your mind clears. You are in what appears to be some sort of lobbey. The walls are covered with mirror tiles (probably one-way mirrors hiding cameras, you note), as are the ceiling and floor. There is also a plain white desk, with an attractive woman in a labcoat sitting behind it.

On the wall behind her you see an elevator, and a frightening-looking black double door marked "Main Lab." On the wall to your right, there is a far friendlier door with a smiley face on it and a large orange "Welcome" painted on it. The woman in the labcoat smiles at you.

"Just pick a door and you'll be on your way."

So, which door do you pick?

Feeling brave, you pass through the imposing double doors and find yourself in a seemingly endless hallway. On either side are doors. The door behind you is locked, so your only option is to pick a new door. Where do you go from here?

Supersoldiers! star star halfstar emptystar emptystar

You enter the Supersoldier Lab and find yourself in an enormous hallway lined floor to ceiling with glowing blue cylinders. The glow doesn't provide much light, but you can make out vaguely humanoid forms but they don't look at all humans.

They're more like...monsters. At the end of the hallway you can see another door. You consider going through, but you want to find out what's in those capsules first. Should you go through the other door, or keep poking around here?

You decide to look at the strange cylinders. You choose one, and get close enough to see inside it. What you find horrifies you. Inside, you find...

The original star star emptystar emptystar emptystar

You peer into the captule.
inside, floating in strange coloured fluids is a bald human... you can't make out the gender, clawing desperately at the glass, trying to gain your attention.

You gasp, trying to think what to do.

The Controls emptystar emptystar emptystar emptystar emptystar

You look at the capsule, trying to find a button marked "open," or something of the sort. Apparently, it's not that easy. The capsule is a blank tube with a metal base. A few screens on the base show colored lines - you recognize the heartbeat monitor, which is going at two or three times the normal speed, but the rest are a mystery. Above them is the number 147. There's no sign of buttons, switches, or anything else pushable.

The person in the tube, having gotten your attention, seems to be trying to break the glass. The wrinkled fists make dull thumping noises and nothing else. The surface of the capsule seems to be about two inches thick.

This time, you notice the oxygen mask strapped to the hairless face. The person isn't in danger of drowning, but that fact doesn't seem to be particularly comforting.

"Stay here!" you yell, rather unnecessarily. "I'll try to get you out!"

You don't wait to see if your words get through. If the controls aren't on the capsules, they must be somewhere else. You look around the dark room for anything resembling a control panel.

There it is. A few capsules away is a simple screen-and-keyboard arrangement sticking up from the floor. You run over to it, stare at the unfamiliar buttons, and eventually press the one labeled "MAIN DATABASE."

A list comes onto the screen, numbers followed by strings of meaningless letters. You scroll down to the number 147. Like the others, it's followed by a string of abbreviations - "F Rep ML Plt v3 2315" - and yesterday's date.

Conveniently, there is a button marked "OPEN" at the top of the keyboard.

Not so fast. emptystar emptystar emptystar emptystar emptystar

You press the button marked OPEN. The screen goes blank for a second. When it comes back, there's nothing but a few words:

AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.

"Please state your name and password," says a disembodied voice.

This might be a problem.

"Um," you say, staring blankly at the control panel. You don't know any passwords. You suppose you could try blind guessing, but you don't even want to think about what might happen if you fail. "Never mind. Cancel, abort, end..."

There doesn't seem to be a button marked "Cancel" on the panel, which is still blinking at you. AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.

"...Disregard? Undo? Cut?"

"Please state your name and password" - the disembodied voice sounds annoyed now - "or security will be activated."

Left with no other particularly attractive options, you turn and run. Maybe you can get out the door before the computer or whatever it is realizes you're gone-

You have just enough time to see the flash of blue light that hits you before you lose consciousness.

When you wake up, it's with a strange, weightless feeling. You can hear a faint bubbling sound. It's actually quite relaxing, like you're floating in...

Oh, no.

You open your eyes to find yourself in one of the blue tubes. Thick curved glass distorts the room, just a foot away and utterly unreachable. The blue light makes your skin look oddly colorless. Your fingers are already getting wrinkly.

You're also completely naked. Whoever put you in here neglected to include your clothes. Your hair has also been removed. It's been an eventful stupor.

There's an oxygen mask strapped to your face. You almost pull it off, out of an instinctive objection to having things strapped to your face, but you stop when you realize it's the only thing keeping you breathing. There's a two-inch sheet of glass between you and the nearest air. There are other tubes and cables strapped to various other parts of your anatomy; you're not sure exactly what they're doing. You suspect that if you did know, you'd want them to stop doing it. Still, it seems unwise to start pulling things out of your body without knowing what they are, so you leave them alone for now.

Looking to your right, you see the prisoner you tried to help floating in the tube next door. The eyes behind the oxygen mask are staring at you with an equal mix of sadness and despair. Help is no longer an option; all you can do now is share the same fate.

Far too soon, you get the first hint of what that fate will be...
