I was hopeful with the start with a number of small paragraphs of him changing forms but it is very easy to remove the transformations without changing the plot. Their are a few breif mentions of someone losing themselves in the animal mind but it has very little effect on the plot
Plot wise the main character has very little agency. He moves around from place to place and other characters use him to advance their goals.
Finally he defeats the big bad with a stroke of luck.
Overall the main character is one of the least intresting characters of the book and all the other characters have much more intresting stories
